An unprecedented conversation between old friends takes place in the Cube Room. Krajcberg & Zanine is the first time an exhibition is dedicated to two of the great names in Brazilian culture: sculptor Franz Krajcberg (1921-2017) and architect and designer José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001). With very diverse personalities and productions, they built in wood the bond that definitively unites them. Both shared a concern for the environment and sustainable use of wood at a time when little was said about the subject.

It was José Zanine Caldas who first took Krajcberg to Nova Viçosa, on the southern coast of Bahia, where he built the famous treehouse studio for the artist. The architect and designer first visited the region in 1968, dreaming of turning it into a cultural capital, bringing along not only Krajcberg but also other figures like musician Chico Buarque and architect Oscar Niemeyer. In Nova Viçosa, Zanine Caldas rediscovered and significantly modified his production, both architectural and furniture, starting to use wood from forest residue. At this moment, the principle of reusing available materials for the creation of his furniture and architecture was used as a form of protest. The pieces produced while he was in Nova Viçosa are known as “Protest Furniture’ and alert to an Atlantic Forest suffering from deforestation and the waste of its raw materials.

Born in Poland, Franz Krajcberg moved to Brazil in 1948, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1957. The year 1972, which internationally marks the realization of the First World Conference on the Human Environment, organized by the United Nations (UN) in Stockholm (Sweden), also definitively marks the sculptor’s production. It is in this year that he starts living in Nova Viçosa, and his work undergoes important changes. Always interested in incorporating elements and natural resources characteristic of the places he visited into his production, he expanded the sculpture process begun years earlier in Minas Gerais, and in Bahia, he began working with vegetation damaged by wildfires and deforestation. He intervened especially in trunks and roots, using natural pigments, created by him, in black, white, and shades of red. The denunciation character of his works made him internationally known as an environmentalist.

Krajcberg & Zanine is a celebration of this partnership and the importance of the production of these two names for Brazilian culture. It is also an example of how artistic production is a fundamental piece to think about our presence in the world.

Uma conversa inédita entre velhos amigos acontece na Sala Cubo. Krajcberg & Zanine é a primeira vez que uma exposição se dedica a dois dos grandes nomes da cultura brasileira: o escultor Franz Krajcberg (1921-2017) e o arquiteto e designer José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001). Com personalidades e produções muito diversas, eles construíram em madeira o elo que os une definitivamente. Ambos tinham em comum a preocupação com o meio ambiente e o uso sustentável da madeira, quando pouco se falava sobre o assunto.

Foi José Zanine Caldas quem levou Krajcberg pela primeira vez a Nova Viçosa, no litoral sul baiano e lá construiu a famosa casa-ateliê do artista no alto de uma árvore. O arquiteto e designer começou a frequentar a região em 1968, quando sonhava em transformá-la em uma capital cultural, levando além de Krajcberg, outros nomes como Chico Buarque e Oscar Niemeyer. É em Nova Viçosa que Zanine redescobre e modifica bastante a sua produção, tanto arquitetônica quanto de mobiliário, passando a utilizar madeiras de resíduo florestal. Nesse momento, o princípio do reaproveitamento de materiais disponíveis para criação de seu mobiliário e arquitetura é utilizado como forma de protesto. As peças produzidas enquanto esteve em Nova Viçosa são conhecidos como Móveis Denúncia e alertam para uma Mata Atlântica que sofria pelo desmatamento e pelo desperdício de sua matéria-prima.

Nascido na Polônia, Franz Krajcberg começa a viver no Brasil em 1948, naturalizando-se em 1957. O ano de 1972, que internacionalmente marca a realização da Primeira Conferência Mundial sobre o Homem e o Meio Ambiente, organizada pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) em Estocolmo (Suécia), marca também de maneira definitiva a produção do escultor. É neste ano que ele passa a residir em Nova Viçosa e sua obra passa por importantes mudanças. Sempre interessado em incorporar em sua produção elementos e recursos naturais característicos dos lugares pelos quais passava, ampliou o processo de escultura iniciado anos antes em Minas Gerais, e na Bahia começou a trabalhar com vegetação danificada por queimadas e desmatamento. Ele intervinha especialmente em troncos e raízes, utilizando pigmentos naturais, criados por ele, nas cores preto, branco e tons de vermelho. O caráter de denúncia de suas obras fez com que ele fosse mundialmente conhecido como um ecologista. 

Krajcberg & Zanine é uma celebração dessa parceria, e da importância da produção desses dois nomes para a cultura brasileira. É também um exemplo de como a produção artística é peça fundamental para pensar nossa presença no mundo.
